Great minds with strong views discuss big ideas
The election is over, and a new government is about to be formed. The issues remain and the big question is: Where to from here? (Wherever ‘here’ turns out to be.)
The 2017 edition of the highly regarded 'Journal of Urgent Writing' is the place to find the answers to that question. Editor Simon Wilson invited 23 of New Zealand’s brightest thinkers to ponder the ‘state of our nation’, and ponder they did. Their strong views about everything from climate change and social investment to race, identity, Trump, community, urbanisation, tertiary education and politics coalesce around a dream about a different, better Aotearoa.
Writing their essays before the election, they collectively expressed a zeitgeisty yearning for things to be better. Now the dust has settled, a group of them will sit down to discuss ‘what next’? Journal editor Simon Wilson (Auckland Affairs Editor, The Spinoff) moderates what promises to be a lively discourse in the company of Auckland-based contributors Gilbert Wong (award-winning journalist), Tim Watkin (RNZ executive producer and blogger) and Maria Masja (essayist). Join them for a thought-provoking encounter as they tackle issues that matter to every New Zealander at Takapuna Library on Wednesday 15 November, 6.30pm.
