Sleeping Better in Pregnancy: A guide to sleep health for New Zealand women

ENHANCES YOU AND YOUR BABY’S HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Sleep is integral to our physical and mental wellbeing. The pace and stress of modern life sees many of us struggling to get a good night’s sleep, and pregnant women can find this particularly difficult.

The new Massey University Press book Sleeping Better in Pregnancy is based on the latest research from Massey University’s internationally renowned Sleep/Wake Research Centre. This information will give New Zealand women the tools they need to optimise their sleep during this crucial time.

Written by sleep experts and mothers Clare Ladyman and Leigh Signal, the book provides up-to-the-minute sleep information. Practical and reassuring, there are sections devoted to strategies for optimising sleep health in pregnancy; coping strategies when sleep is hard to achieve; managing expectations; and the sleep challenges specific to each trimester.

‘I could cope so much better if I could just get a good night’s sleep’ is a phrase Clare Ladyman heard repeatedly when talking to friends and mothers about their sleep patterns, and it prompted her to explore the field of sleep science. Her PhD focussed on how sleep and mental health are related throughout pregnancy and postnatally, and how providing information on sleep can help reduce the likelihood of mothers experiencing depression.

There will be ups and downs for expectant mothers in trying to meet their sleep needs; busy personal and professional lives will often play havoc. The ideas and information contained in Sleeping Better in Pregnancy will reassure and equip them with everything they need to know to make the most of their sleep
